Alexander the Great, born in 356 BC in Pella, Macedonia, was one of the most influential military leaders in history. He inherited the throne of Macedonia at the age of 20 after the assassination of his father, King Philip II. From the outset, Alexander had ambitions to expand the Macedonian Empire and to fulfill his own personal dreams of conquest. In 334 BC, Alexander launched his campaign against the Persian Empire, which was then ruled by King Darius III. Crossing the Hellespont with his army, Alexander defeated the Persian forces in a series of battles, including the Battle of Granicus and the Battle of Issus. In 331 BC, the decisive Battle of Gaugamela took place, resulting in a crushing defeat for the Persians.
