Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi, was a prominent leader and advocate of nonviolent civil disobedience in India during the Indian independence movement. He was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, a town in present-day Gujarat, India. Gandhi is often referred to as the "Father of the Nation" in India and is internationally recognized for his philosophy of Satyagraha, which means "truth-force" or "soul-force." Gandhi came from a middle-class family and received his early education in India. He studied law in London and later worked as a lawyer in South Africa, where he became involved in civil rights struggles and experienced firsthand the effects of racial discrimination. His experiences in South Africa played a significant role in shaping his philosophy of nonviolence and resistance.
